Meet Sir Oak Legends- My service dog in training.

Jordan and his service dog Oak
Me and Oak!

Service dogs are not just pets; they are highly trained animals that provide remarkable support and assistance to individuals with disabilities. These dogs are trained to perform a wide range of tasks that their owners may not be able to do independently, making their lives much easier and more manageable.

Meet Oak My service dog in training. Oak, who helps Jordan with physical disabilities and neurological conditions. Oak is a service dog currently in training to support and assist Jordan in daily activities. He is trained to perform different tasks, such as getting Jordan help in an emergency, alerting him to high blood pressure, picking up dropped items, alerting Constance to Jordan's health alarms, and providing protection.

Training a service dog requires significant time, effort, and dedication, but the benefits they provide to their owners are immeasurable. Oak's training will last for two or more years, and during this period, it is essential to respect their right to be with their owners in public spaces and businesses. In South Carolina, the law protects service dogs in training, and the public should be aware of this and treat them with kindness and respect.

Oak is currently in training in the following categories:

Scent training involves teaching the dog to recognize the specific scent of their owner when they are having a high blood pressure episode. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell, and scent training involves positive reinforcement, operant conditioning, and exposure to the owner's scent samples in different situations. Oak has a natural talent for scent training and has alerted us to high blood pressure and AD with 100% accuracy. Oak's ability to detect slight changes and respond appropriately shows his incredible responsiveness to his owner's needs.

Oak is training in mobility service. Dogs trained to assist with mobility issues can open automatic doors, retrieve out-of-reach objects, bring up dropped articles to your hands, and operate the emergency speed dial. Oak is just getting to the stages of training for retrievals, which are becoming operational tasks. He has a knack for buttons and is learning canine communication with buttons.

Oak, is additionally training to leverage his instinct to protect. We are training him as a highly skilled guard dog, to protect Jordan. One of the key parts of Oak's training is his ability to patrol the area around Jordan's wheelchair, keeping a watchful eye for any potential threats and alerting Jordan if necessary. With Oak by his side, Jordan can feel more secure, knowing that his loyal companion is always on guard.

We will update you on his successes in the future.

Service dogs like Oak provide their owners with the support and protection, making their lives more manageable and giving them the confidence and independence they need to navigate their daily lives. Oak's presence in Jordan's life has been a source of comfort and joy, and they are immensely grateful for his crucial role in their lives.
